Star Hospitals Saves 1.5-Year-Old Baby of 7 Kg with Pancreatic Duct Leakage Problem

In a story of hope and exceptional medical expertise, Star Hospitals has successfully treated a 1.5-year-old baby, a Telangana native suffering from a rare pancreatic condition. Weighing just 7 kg, the child had been enduring severe abdominal pain, recurring fever, and abdominal bloating for over two months, leaving his family desperate for a solution.

The child was diagnosed with fluid accumulation in the abdomen due to a pancreatic problem. Paediatricgastroenterologists Dr. Prashanth and Dr. Poushya began the treatment, providing intravenous fluids and analgesics. Their quick intervention prevented major organ failure, but the symptoms persisted with ongoing abdominal distension despite fluid removal and an MRCP scan.

Realizing the complexity of the case, the team consulted Dr. Moka Praneeth, MD (AIIMS), DM Gastro (AIIMS), Consultant Gastroenterologist, Star Hospitals, Nanakramguds. He took over the case. Known for his expertise in managing liver diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, pediatric pancreatic cases, and advanced procedures like ERCP, POEM, and EUS, Dr. Praneeth conducted detailed investigations, including MRCP and fluid analysis, which confirmed pancreatic duct leakage. "This condition is extremely rare in children, especially at this age," said Dr. Praneeth. He quickly identified that the child was suffering from a pancreatic duct leakage, which caused fluid to accumulate in the abdomen.

A Delicate and Pioneering Procedure

On 27th November 2024, Dr. Praneeth, with the support of paediatric anaesthetist Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi, performed a highly intricate Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedure. Using a therapeutic duodenoscope, Dr. Praneeth carefully placed a stent in the pancreatic duct to stop the leakage.

“Pancreatic duct leakage in children this young is very uncommon,” said Dr. Moka Praneeth. “After discussing the procedure and its risks with the family, we performed an ERCP to stop the leakage by placing a stent in the pancreatic duct. The child tolerated the 30-minute procedure exceptionally well and showed immediate recovery. Today, he is thriving and under regular follow-up care.” After five days of close monitoring, the child was discharged in stable condition and continues to thrive under regular follow-up care. There are case reports of ERCP for pancreatic juice accumulation in younger children as well elsewhere.  This is one of the youngest children who underwent therapeutic ERCP with therapeutic duodenoscope successfully in our centre.

Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi, the paediatric anaesthetist who monitored the patient throughout the procedure, every step of this journey was meticulously planned, and it was incredible to witness the resilience of this little fighter.
